Retaining Walls in Belton, MO

A retaining wall doesn’t stand on its face — it stands on the balance between the soil it holds back and the soil packed behind and over its heel. When backfill goes in loose, in deep dumps instead of thin backfill lifts, it keeps settling for years. The grade behind the wall drops, a patio or driveway above it cracks, and the wall loses the weight that was helping anchor it.

We backfill in tight lifts, compacting each one before the next goes on, so the wall loads evenly and the finished grade stays put. On a Belton lot where the builder already placed fill, we check whether it was compacted before we trust a footing to it — because a wall bridging soft, uncontrolled fill at one end and firm native clay at the other settles unevenly and cracks at the seam.

The City of Belton requires a permit for most retaining walls, and a wall over four feet from the bottom of the footing generally needs engineered plans stamped by a licensed professional. A wall carrying a surcharge from a driveway or a commercial pad above can reach that line at a lower height.
