North Lawrence sits on soft Kaw River alluvial bottom with a high water table; the uplands around Mount Oread and west Lawrence are firmer clay over shale. The right build differs — but both need a proof-rolled subgrade, 4,000-PSI concrete, and control joints saw-cut on time.

That split decides everything. A slab poured in the North Lawrence bottoms behaves nothing like one off 6th Street on the ridge, and a contractor who pours the same base for both gets one of them wrong.
