In Paola, the floor is the last trade in — and it inherits everything

By the time we pour a floor in Paola, the plumber, the electrician, and the excavator have all been through the building. Every trench they cut is now part of the subgrade. We survey and re-compact that work before the slab goes on top of it, because the floor cannot be better than what is underneath it.

Whether conduit is under the slab or in it. Conduit inside a six-inch slab means it is not a six-inch slab anymore — it is a plane of weakness on the line the electrician found convenient. We route it below the base where we can; where we cannot, the slab gets thickened and the rack load plan rechecked against the reduced section.

Where the floor drains, pits, and column blockouts land. Each is a restraint a shrinking slab has to work around, so joints get routed to them deliberately and the cracks go where we put them.

What the pipe penetrations are sleeved with. A pipe cast tight into concrete is a crack starter; sleeved and isolated, it is not.

And whether the vapor retarder survived the other trades. Sheet that has been walked on, cut for pipe, and driven across is not a vapor retarder anymore. It gets patched and taped before concrete — after the pour it is unreachable for good.

What actually runs on a Paola floor

Paola's heavy traffic is not a wire-guided aisle. It is trucks and equipment turning off the US-169 ramps, delivery vehicles working Baptiste Drive, and forklifts inside buildings laid out decades ago. That is random traffic, and it gets an overall FF/FL number tested to ASTM E1155. It does not get a VNA specification, and we will not sell you one you cannot use.

What it does get is a slab sized to the loads that will actually sit on it, and an honest look at the dock. Where hard wheels cross a joint at a leveler, the joint edge fails first — so those joints get armored and the rest get cut and filled on a schedule tied to the slab's shrinkage rather than to the punch list.

All of it depends on the slab being allowed to dry. On Paola's slow-draining Miami County clay that takes longer than most schedules budget, so we read the floor with F2170 RH probes before anything gets coated.

How a Paola floor gets approved, and who pours it

Paola has an established permitting process through City Hall, and as the county seat it is used to running real projects. Why do you care so much about work that happened before you got here?
Because it is holding your floor up. In Paola most industrial floors go into buildings where the plumbing, electrical, and site work are already done, and every one of those trades left a trench. A trench backfilled by shoving the dirt back in settles for years, and when it settles under a slab you get a straight crack directly above it. Can conduit run inside the slab?
