The racks decide how thick a Belton floor is

A warehouse slab is not sized by the building's square footage. It is sized by the heaviest concentrated load that will ever sit on it, and in a distribution building that is the rack load under a single upright baseplate — a plate the size of a dinner plate carrying tens of thousands of pounds straight down into the concrete. Get the post loads first, then set thickness, joint spacing, and reinforcement to them.

Belton has more of that question than most cities its size. The Southview Commerce Center and the I-49 build-out since 2015 brought 500,000-square-foot logistics buildings and e-commerce fulfillment work to a town that was a railroad stop, and those buildings rack high. A default six-inch detail does not answer them.

Cass County ground under the I-49 boom

The slab only performs if what is under it does. Belton's subgrade is a clay that softens when wet and gives back unevenly, and the newer industrial ground off 163rd Street is engineered fill placed fast during the boom years — which is exactly the ground that keeps consolidating after a floor is on it.

We build the base in compacted lifts, proof-roll it before we schedule concrete, and seal a vapor retarder tight to the underside of the slab. Uniform bearing is what keeps a rack post from punching a soft spot, and it is cheaper to find that soft spot with a loaded truck than with a loaded upright.

Flat where the reach trucks run

Once the racks go up, flatness stops being cosmetic. FF/FL is measured under ASTM E1155, usually within 72 hours of the pour, and the target depends on how the building is driven. Open-field random traffic takes an overall spec. Fixed aisles are measured along the wheel paths as defined traffic, and a VNA building running high-reach turret trucks is tighter again, because a dip the wheel barely notices becomes visible sway at the top of a 30-foot mast.

Belton's newer industrial pads are already showing joint failure, and joints are where hard wheels always find a floor first. We cut early, transfer load across the joints with a dowel basket, and back the edges with a semi-rigid joint filler so the wheel rolls across the joint instead of hammering into it.

Why do you need our rack layout before quoting the floor?

What governs is not the pallet weight averaged across the building, it is the load concentrated under each upright baseplate — a few square inches driving tens of thousands of pounds into the concrete. Thickness, joint spacing, and reinforcement all follow from those post loads and aisle widths. Without them we are guessing, and a guess shows up as cracks fanning out from the uprights.
Is a six-inch slab enough for a Southview-type building?
Sometimes, and sometimes not — which is the point. Six inches is a default, not an answer. A 500,000-square-foot logistics building racked four levels high with heavy pallet loads may need more slab, better load transfer, or a different joint layout than the same footprint used for bulk floor storage. We run the numbers against your loads and tell you what the floor actually needs to carry them.
What flatness number should we spec?
It depends on how the building gets driven. An open field where lifts wander anywhere is random traffic and takes an overall FF/FL spec measured under ASTM E1155. Fixed narrow aisles are measured along the wheel paths as defined traffic.
