Why a Raymore floor lifts at its edges

Concrete dries from the top down, and the top shrinks first. That difference is what makes a slab curling upward at its panel edges — the middle stays put while the perimeter lifts, sometimes only a fraction of an inch. It sounds trivial until a loaded lift wheel drops off a raised edge a few thousand times a day and starts breaking the joint apart. On a new industrial floor, curl is the defect that shows up first and costs the most to chase.

So we hold the water down, cure the surface properly rather than letting it flash off, and saw cut the joints early — within hours, while the concrete is still gaining strength — so the slab cracks where we told it to. Panel spacing gets set to the slab thickness, not to habit. Then joint filler goes in later, after the slab has done most of its shrinking, so the filler is supporting an edge instead of being torn apart by it.

Curl has a second cause that has nothing to do with the finish: a slab that can only dry upward. If the ground under a floor keeps feeding moisture into its underside, the bottom never shrinks, the top keeps shrinking, and the edges stay curled for the life of the floor.
