Founding a footing through deep alluvium to bearing
On soft ground, founding the base is the decision that makes or breaks the wall. We probe the soil under the wall line to find where firm bearing starts, then dig through the soft alluvium to reach it, setting the footing below both the frost line and the soft layer. Where firm ground is deep, the base is widened or the wall is engineered so the load spreads over enough soil to carry it without settling. A footing that stops short in the soft material settles, usually unevenly, and drags the wall down with it — so we don't stop short.
The highest water table in the metro
Riverside's water table is as high as anywhere in the KC area, and that makes drainage non-negotiable. A wall fronting saturated bottom soil carries the full hydrostatic pressure of the water banked behind it, on top of the soil load — the combination that fails river-bottom walls. We relieve it with a full drainage column: a bed of clean drainage aggregate against the back of the wall, a perforated drain along the footing wrapped in filter fabric so the fine bottom soil can't clog it, and weep outlets that carry the water out front. On ground this wet, the drain has to stay open for the life of the wall.
Footing, heel, toe, and the base that resists sliding and overturning
Once the base is founded and drained, it still has to resist the two ways a wall fails. The heel reaches back under the retained soil so the fill's weight pins the wall down against overturning, and the base width plus a shear key cast into its underside resists sliding as the soil pushes. On soft ground the base often runs wider than usual, both to resist those forces and to spread the load. We tie the reinforcement to the engineered plan and pour the footing and stem so the wall works as one piece.
