A Smithville warehouse floor placed in January is fine — provided the ground under it is not frozen, the heat in the building is vented, and the slab stays protected while it gains strength. We settle all three before the trucks are ordered, because a cold-weather floor does not fail in the middle. It fails at the surface — the eighth of an inch that carries every wheel, and the only part a dry-shake hardener can ever bond to.
The US-169 corridor is building at a pace the rest of the Northland does not match, and the interior slab is one of the few trades that can genuinely work through a Missouri winter. The shell is closed, the roof is on, the schedule says pour. The mistake is reading "enclosed" as "warm."
Concrete gains strength through a chemical reaction, and that reaction slows down hard as temperature drops toward freezing. ACI 306 is built around it: the concrete has to be held above a specified temperature for a specified stretch after placement. If fresh concrete freezes even once before it gets there, the damage is permanent — and invisible until the surface starts coming apart under the first traffic.
A roof is not heat, and the heater you pick can ruin the floor
So the contractor brings heat into the building. This is where a good floor gets destroyed by a reasonable-sounding decision.
Direct-fired salamander heaters burn fuel into the space they are heating. The exhaust is carbon dioxide, and in a sealed building it has nowhere to go but into the fresh surface of the slab, where it reacts with the concrete before it has hardened. The result is carbonation: a soft, chalky top layer that dusts under traffic, gives up its abrasion resistance immediately, and will not hold a dry-shake hardener or bond a coating.
The cruel part is that everything else passes. The building was warm. The slab never froze. The strength cylinders come back fine, because the body of the concrete is genuinely good — it is the top eighth of an inch that got poisoned, and that is the only part anybody drives on. The fix afterward is grinding or a topping, on a floor that is three weeks old.
Vented or indirect-fired heat avoids all of it, and it is a decision made before the pour rather than diagnosed after.
Four things that have to be true before a winter pour
Before we place a slab in a Smithville building between December and February, four things get confirmed:
- The subgrade and base are not frozen. Concrete placed on frozen ground is sitting on something that will thaw, lose volume, and let the slab down after everyone has gone home. Ice and snow come off the base and off the vapor retarder before the sheet is covered — not after.
- The heat is vented or indirect. No unvented combustion in the space while the surface is still fresh.
- The protection covers the whole window, not just the pour day. Blankets, enclosure, and fuel for the days that follow. The reaction does not care that the crew went home Friday.
- The drying clock is understood up front. A heated, sealed building full of wet concrete with no air exchange does not dry — it just gets warm and humid.
That last one is what usually moves a schedule, and it is worth saying plainly. Heat is not drying. Heat plus air movement plus a path for the moisture to leave is drying. Owners expect the coating to follow the pour by a couple of weeks; F2170 RH probes in the slab are the only honest arbiter of that date, and in a winter building they frequently say wait. We would rather deliver that news in November than in February.
Permits, and the crews behind a Smithville floor

There is real construction traffic to plan around right now — the Commercial Avenue rehabilitation and the US-169 viaduct work both change how a ready-mix truck reaches a site, and on a winter pour a truck stuck in a detour is not a scheduling annoyance, it is a cold load. Site disturbance on the Missouri side falls under MoDNR.
Clay County's upland ground holds water and gives it up slowly, and under a new roof it never gets to dry downward. That is what makes the vapor retarder directly beneath the slab, and the reading that follows it, worth doing properly the first time. Joints get saw cut on schedule regardless of the weather — cold concrete sets slower, so the cutting window moves, and that gets watched rather than assumed.
