The wrinkle is water. Rock that shallow does not drain down; it holds water above itself, so moisture sits in the subbase under a slab longer than the ground surface suggests. That is a coating problem, not a strength problem. The vapor retarder goes directly under the slab, tight, with no sand blotter layer between it and the concrete, and we test the slab with F2170 RH probes before anyone puts a coating or a finish down. A floor that is strong enough and still wet enough to fail a coating is common here.
Joints, anchors, and the holes the last tenant left
Every joint on a hard-wheel floor is a weak edge, and reconfiguration adds more. We saw cut the contraction pattern early, on the concrete's schedule rather than the crew's, and place a dowel basket at construction joints so adjacent panels carry load together instead of stepping apart under a loaded forklift. On the main travel lines through the building, where wheels cross joints thousands of times a week, an armored joint earns its cost.
Then the reconfiguration list — the part nobody hands the next tenant. Abandoned anchor holes get cleaned and filled with a structural material, not smeared over with patch and painted. New anchors do not get set within a few inches of a joint edge, because that is exactly where the concrete has the least to hold with. Joint filler goes in after the slab has done most of its shrinking, and it gets re-cut and re-filled when the layout changes rather than left broken. And we leave a marked-up plan showing where the old anchors are, which is the single cheapest thing a Gardner building owner can hand the next occupant.
