In Lexington the floors that lasted were the ones that stayed wet

Curing a floor means keeping water in the concrete long enough for the cement to go on hydrating — commonly seven days, under ACI 308. It is not drying. It is not waiting. A slab left to dry out early still reaches most of its strength and loses most of its wear surface, and that loss is permanent.

This is a town that knows the difference between built and built to last. The brick on Main Street, the Lafayette County Courthouse, the Wentworth Military Academy buildings, the Madonna of the Trail out at the bluff — a hundred and fifty years on a Missouri River bluff and all still here. The floors inside the newer buildings behind them are a shorter story, and the reason is almost never the concrete. It is what happened to the concrete in the week after it was placed.

The work here is the Lexington Industrial Area, the buildings along the MO-13 and US-24 corridor, back-of-house behind the historic storefronts, and service space around Lexington Regional Health Center. On all of it, the top of the slab is the only part that ever takes abrasion, and the top of the slab is the first part a short cure takes away. Curing is not drying, and mixing the two up costs you the surface

Concrete does not harden by drying out. It hardens by hydration, a reaction between cement and water that continues only while there is water present to react. Stop the water and the reaction stops with it — not later, and not gradually. Whatever had not hydrated by then never will.

The cruelty of it is where that bites first. The surface is the exposed face, so it is the part that loses water fastest, and it is also the only part that anything ever touches. A floor whose top dried out in the first two days will still pass for sound: the body of the slab hit its number, the cylinders were never the problem. The top is what is porous and soft. It dusts under traffic, it gives up its fines, it will not hold a dry-shake hardener, and it will not bond a coating.

So the cure is a real operation with a real cost. Water on the slab and kept there, insulated blankets, or a sprayed curing compound that seals the water in. Which one gets picked is not a preference. It is a decision about the rest of the floor's life, and it is the subject of the next paragraph, because most owners never get told it is a decision at all.

The cure you pick decides what the floor can wear later

A curing compound works by sealing the surface — a sprayed membrane that keeps the water from leaving. That is exactly what it is for, and on a floor that will stay bare concrete it is a fine answer. But a sealed surface is precisely what you cannot have if that floor is ever going to take a coating, a polish or a topping, because a coating has to bond to concrete and it cannot bond to a membrane. Getting the compound back off means grinding or shot-blasting the whole floor, which is a real number that lands on somebody's budget six months after the crew that saved an afternoon has gone.

Cure-and-seal products get sold as one product doing two jobs, and they are a compromise. If a coating is anywhere in the building's future, we would rather cure with water or blankets, or with a dissipating compound checked against what the coating manufacturer actually requires, and we would rather have that conversation before the pour than after the bid.

Then the sequence reverses on you. Curing keeps water in. A coating needs the slab dry, so the water has to come back out, and F2170 RH probes are what tell you when it has. Those are opposite operations in a fixed order, and cutting the cure short to start the drying early does not buy a single day — it just costs you the surface first and then makes you wait anyway.

MO-13, the courthouse square, and the part we cannot fix later

Lexington's code expects commercial sites to have room to load and unload, which is a sensible rule in a town where MO-13 is a Missouri River crossing and the MO-13 and US-24 junction takes the braking of every loaded ag and freight truck that uses it. City Hall reads the plans, downtown work draws historic-district attention, and ground disturbance falls under MoDNR's stormwater rules — an agency that also happens to be one of this town's employers.

Honest about scale: 4,652 people. The floors here carry carts, jacks, pallet traffic and a lift — random traffic, which an honest overall flatness number covers. A VNA tolerance belongs to a building that does not exist here, and we will say so instead of selling it. The money belongs in the base and in the week after the pour; our excavation approach covers the first part.

And the honest part: a cure cannot be added later. A crack can be routed and filled, a joint can be rebuilt, a worn surface can be ground or topped. There is no going back and hydrating cement that stopped reacting three years ago. Is curing just leaving the floor alone for a week?
The opposite. Leaving it alone is how floors get lost. Concrete hardens by hydration, which is cement reacting with water, and it only continues while water is there for it to react with. Curing is the work of keeping that water in the slab — ponding or wet coverings, insulated blankets, or a sprayed compound that seals the surface. Under ACI 308 the common specified stretch is seven days. A floor that dried out on day two still gets most of its strength, because the body of the slab has plenty of water. What it loses is the top, which is the exposed face and the only part that ever wears.
We are putting an epoxy down eventually. Does that change the cure?
It changes it completely, and this is the part that gets missed. A curing compound seals the surface — that is how it works. A coating has to bond to concrete and cannot bond to a membrane, so a compound that was never planned around becomes a grinding or shot-blasting bill before the epoxy can go down. If a coating is coming, we cure with water or blankets, or with a dissipating compound checked against what your coating manufacturer requires rather than what happened to be on the truck. Then the slab still has to dry, and F2170 probes tell you when. Cure holds water in; drying lets it out. Same floor, opposite jobs, fixed order.
Can a bad cure be repaired later?
Not really, and we would rather be straight about it. Cracks can be routed and filled. Joints can be rebuilt or armored. A worn surface can be ground, or a topping can be bonded over it to restore something to run on. But none of that is fixing the cure — it is buying a new surface because the original one is gone. There is no process for going back and hydrating cement that stopped reacting years ago. That is the whole reason we treat the week after the pour as part of the job rather than as something that happens after we leave.
