The first twenty feet inside an Oak Grove overhead door is not an interior floor
Class 8 trucks off I-70 back into Oak Grove buildings all winter carrying snow, water, and road salt on their tires. The floor inside those doors gets weather the rest of the slab never sees. We design that strip as its own floor, with its own mix and its own joint — not as a line on a drawing.
Oak Grove's industrial ground sits on I-70 at the Highway 131 interchange, and those buildings move real freight. Doors stay open through a loading shift, wind drives rain in, and trucks track deicer onto the slab in January and leave it in a puddle when the building warms up. That is freeze-thaw and salt landing on concrete specified for a dry interior, where a dry-shake hardener was the only surface protection anybody asked for.
The failure always looks the same: the surface inside the door scales and pits while the floor thirty feet in still looks new. Not from abrasion — from water freezing inside concrete never built to hold it. By then the fix is a topping or a partial-depth replacement in the one bay you cannot shut down.
Why the same mix cannot do both jobs
Here is the conflict most floor specs never resolve. Concrete that has to survive freezing while wet needs entrained air — microscopic bubbles giving freezing water somewhere to expand. Concrete that has to take a hard steel trowel must not have entrained air, because troweling seals the surface over those bubbles and the trapped air lifts the finish off in sheets. ACI 302 has warned about it for decades.
So an interior warehouse floor gets specified without air on purpose, and that is the right call — everywhere except the door line, where the floor is functionally outside.
The resolution is not a compromise mix. It is two mixes and a joint between them. The strip inside the door gets air-entrained concrete and a broom or light-float finish that does not need a burnished surface. The interior floor keeps its non-air mix, its hard trowel, and its dry-shake hardener if it is getting one. The line between them is a real construction joint, put where we want it rather than where the paint ends.
Where hard wheels cross that strip, the joint gets an armored joint — steel edges cast into both sides — because a plain saw cut in the wettest, most salted joint in the building will not keep its edges.
Where the apron meets the floor
The door line is also where the building's structure changes. Outside is an apron on grade that freezes; inside is a floor in a heated space that does not. Jackson County frost depth runs about 36 inches, so the foundation at that wall goes below 36 inches while the slab on either side of it is six.
That gives you three elements — apron, foundation, floor — meeting inside about four feet, each moving on its own schedule. They get isolated from one another rather than cast together, because a floor poured tight against a frost wall is restrained at exactly the point it most needs to move, and the crack shows up in the first hard freeze.
Drainage decides how much of this you fight at all. If the apron slopes toward the door, the water is coming in and staying, so we check its fall before designing the floor. Under the interior slab, Oak Grove's Wymore clay and the vapor retarder over it behave as they do anywhere in eastern Jackson County — but at the door that sheet matters more, not less. It is the one place liquid water gets under the edge and pushes F2170 RH readings back up months after the slab looked dry.
